Hello from the HSSC:
An icon and a friend to animals is gone. Eva Burrell passed away on July 18, 2010. Full of spunk and compassion, with a hefty shot of independence, Eva took it upon herself to rescue the stray and homeless animals of the area, thusly beginning the fledgling Schoolcraft County Humane Society. For twenty years Eva provided care for abandoned animals at her rural home until she was able to find families for untold numbers of cats and dogs. Many people in the community have wonderful stories of their “Eva dog” or their “Eva cat.” In January of 2000, a newly formed Humane Society of Schoolcraft County opened the Eva Burrell Animal Shelter to continue her efforts and to allow her a bit of relief from sole responsibility of caring for the county’s animals. Even so, Eva remained a staunch advocate for the animals and was keenly interested in animal welfare. We are ever grateful to Eva for her regard and care and will fondly remember Eva’s walks with the dogs - or as she called it, “the puppy shuffle.” Although we know Eva would much prefer the contented wriggle of a kitten in her lap or the happy wag of a tail alongside her, we salute this remarkable woman. Thank you, Eva, for all your selfless work on behalf of the beautiful creatures you loved so dearly.
